Sectors linked to civil engineering are many and interdependent, with each of them benefiting the other sectors. These sectors include structural engineering, municipal engineering, construction design and supervision, highways and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental protection, surveying and cartography.

In Canada, jobs in the energy and natural resources sector are distributed in four areas: forests, minerals, energy and geomatics and geosciences. Each of these areas includes a multitude of professions from the lumberjack to the engineering specializing in oil well drilling.

In order to increase the number of women working in technical trades, the Canadian government and women's associations have developed a strategy to improve parity.
